BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU OF SASKATCHEWAN
The BBB of Sask and RCMP Commercial Crimes Section want you to aware of the following;
The BBB of Sask have received a number inquires from consumers who are purchasing DVD’s over the Internet.
After our own investigation and finding’s we asked the RCMP Commercial Crime Section to become involved with this scam.
On February 14, 2007 the "F" Division Commercial Crime Section of the RCMP initiated an investigation after receiving a request from the Better Business Bureau of Saskatchewan to investigate suspected fraudulent online DVD stores. The RCMP along with the Regina Police Service determined that there is no connection to Saskatchewan other than a false address. The customer complaints range from not receiving an order, receiving broken DVD's, or receiving DVD's recorded from television shows. Customers experienced difficulty when following up with their concerns. Customers were advised to send damaged DVD’s to a Regina address. This Regina address was in fact a provincial government office building. The websites include: dvdavenue.tv, dvdavenue.com, dvddonkey.com, allmyfavoritetvshows.com, tvaddicts.tv, and ultimatedvdshop.com. These websites are elaborate and appear authentic. Criminals are getting smarter and are using some of the features consumers are being educated to watch out for.
The majority of victims of this fraud are from the United States. Once a consumer has given away their credit card and personal information during a fraudulent transaction, it is impossible to get that information back. Consumers need to ensure they are giving their credit card information to reputable merchants. Consumers are encouraged to check with others who have purchased product from the merchant or with the Better Business Bureau. The RCMP will be forwarding their investigation to Phonebusters. For more information please contact your local police or the Better Business Bureau.
